We'd like to take a moment to introduce ourselves and explain an upcoming event we will be participating in? It is called the Race Across America, better known as RAAM. In the past, we had have assembled a four-rider team along with a crew however in 2022 we will have a solo rider along with a crew to represent Rotary Clubs from around the world participating in the Polio Plus campaign to eradicate Polio throughout the world. This is our fifth year to year to participate in RAAM. This race starts on June 14th, 2022 in Oceanside, CA and we hope to reach the finish by June 25th in Annapolis, MD. We will travel approximately 3,000 miles during what has been called one of the toughest events in the world.
When Rotary International and its partners (World Health Organization, Center for Disease Control, and UNICEF) started this campaign in 1985, there were 127 endemic countries in the world with 350,000 cases reported per year. Through this aggressive campaign, today there are only two endemic countries remaining with just 378 cases reported in 2019. Wiping out Polio will be only the second disease ever eradicated, with Small Pox being the first. Our goal of total eradication is in sight.
The name of our team is "Team Rotary RAAMs Polio"! Our team’s goal is to raise $1 million for Rotary’s PolioPlus program and raise awareness of how close we are to eradicating the disease. More than 400 million doses of vaccine are used each year at 60 cents each. Polio has been eradicated in the US since 1979 but, is only a plane ride away!!
We are seeking financial support to End Polio Now. Will you consider supporting our team by making a tax-deductible** donation?
We’re not taking this event lightly. RAAM is an intense, grueling, and challenging bicycle race. However, it is not as grueling or as challenging as living with polio. Just think, children that you will likely never meet will be able to walk (and ride a bicycle) because of your generous gift.
Thank you for your consideration,
Team Rotary RAAMs Polio
Team Rotary RAAMs Polio
With its four successful entries in the Race Across America as a team of four, two of which were category winners and two-time record holders, the Rotary RAAMs Polio team raised over $ 4.08 million in donations to eradicate polio. This enabled 6.18 million vaccine doses to be financed. In 2020 the Race Across America was canceled due to Covid-19 and in 2021 we had to withdrawal since we were not able obtain the necessary clearance from the US government due to their COVID travel restrictions . In 2022 we will be back and want to make a substantial contribution to the eradication of polio again.
Solo Racer in 2022
The “Team Rotary RAAMS Polio” will start again in 2022. This time not as a team of 4, but with Kurt Matzler as a solo racer. Kurt Matzler, who competed in the Rotary RAAMs Polio team every four years, Kurt wants to do it alone in 2022 !! He is accompanied by a crew consisting of 9-10 members.
We are looking for sponsors to finance participation in the Race Across America (participation fee, flights, hotels, rental cars, material, etc.). We would be very happy if you support yourself as a sponsor in our fight against polio.
